Understanding Marine DC Systems

Most onboard reliability problems trace back to the DC system, not the AC side. This primer explains the parts an owner or captain should understand — even without an engineering background.
12V vs 24V
24V halves the current for the same power, which halves voltage drop and reduces cable size. Any new-build or major refit should default to 24V unless there is a compelling reason (small tender, legacy equipment).
Distribution and protection
Every conductor leaving a battery must be fused within specified inches of the terminal. Downstream, breakers protect the wire, not the load. A common failure mode is undersized main fuses that never trip on a fault.
The battery monitor
A properly configured battery monitor (with a shunt on the negative bus) is the only accurate view of state-of-charge on lithium systems. Voltage alone is misleading.
